How to use this calculator

Measure each room you're flooring (length × width). Add multiple rooms if your project covers more than one space. Pick your flooring type and grade — the calculator shows live cost and quantity.

Toggle on the extras you actually need: underlayment, transition strips, quarter round trim, and stair pieces. Choose DIY or professional install. Add removal of your existing flooring if needed.

Pro tips

Order more than you think. Tile waste runs 15% on straight cuts and up to 20% on diagonals or patterns. Buy from the same lot — color batches vary. Save the leftovers for repairs.

LVP > laminate for kitchens and bathrooms.Vinyl plank handles moisture; laminate doesn't. Both look similar but LVP is fully waterproof.

Underlayment isn't optional. It cushions, dampens sound, and protects against subfloor moisture. Most LVP has it built into the plank — everything else needs it added.

Pro install adds $2–$10/sq ft. Click-lock laminate and LVP are doable DIY. Hardwood, tile, and patterns are usually worth hiring out.

Frequently asked questions

How much flooring should I buy beyond what I need?
Plan on 10% extra for straight installs of hardwood, laminate, LVP, engineered wood, and carpet. Bump that to 15% for tile (more cuts) and 20% for diagonal patterns or herringbone. The calculator handles this automatically based on your pattern selection.
What's the difference between hardwood, engineered wood, and laminate?
Hardwood is solid wood — refinishable, lasts decades, costs the most. Engineered wood has a real wood top layer over plywood — more dimensionally stable, can go in basements. Laminate is a printed photo of wood under a plastic wear layer — cheapest, looks decent, doesn't handle water.
Can I install flooring myself?
Click-lock laminate and LVP are very DIY-friendly — most people can do a room in a weekend. Hardwood and tile require more skill, specialty tools, and patience. Patterns (herringbone, diagonal) and stairs are usually worth hiring out.
Do I need underlayment?
Almost always. Underlayment cushions, dampens noise, and protects against subfloor moisture. Most quality LVP has it built into the plank, so you can skip a separate underlayment. Carpet uses padding instead of underlayment. Tile uses cement backer board.
How much does flooring installation cost?
Professional install runs $2–$10 per sq ft depending on flooring type. Laminate and LVP are on the low end; hardwood, tile, and patterns are on the high end. Add removal of existing flooring ($1–$5 per sq ft) and subfloor prep if needed.
How long does new flooring last?
Solid hardwood: 50–100+ years (can be refinished multiple times). Engineered wood: 20–40 years. LVP: 15–25 years. Laminate: 10–25 years. Tile: 50+ years. Carpet: 5–15 years.
